Protech Dent™ For the Military
The Protech Dent™ mouth guard was tested during the Department of Defense sponsored research project, using a standard head form with over 50 sensors to measure how impact forces transfer through the head in a drop test at Wayne State University Biomechanical Laboratory (known for impact testing of cars and sports and military helmets).

During military training and duty dental injuries can occur. Conventional mouth guards are hard to use since communication is compromised due to the bulky material. Thinner and more comfortable professional mouth guards from dentists and dental laboratories are too expensive. Protech Dent™ is a perfect and inexpensive alternative the soldiers can fit themselves in minutes.
Protech Dent™ Mouth Guards allow military personnel to talk, whisper, drink and breathe heavily without any difficulties.
Department of Defense chose Akervall Technolgies to develop a mouth guard for soldiers
Akervall Technologies received a research grant from Department of Defense (DOD) in the fall of 2011 (SBIR phase I grant) to develop a new mouth guards for soldiers. DOD has recognized our company and our mouth guard technology as a cutting edge dental appliance that have great potential for our troops. Dental injuries and traumatic brain injuries are common in the military with tremendous suffering and costs as a result. We are dedicated to help DOD to develop our current sports mouth guard Protech Dent into a new generation high tech protective devices.
The Project
Our scientific Officer, Professor Johannes Schwank, PhD, and our CEO, Jan Akervall, MD, PhD, have developed a research plan together with Wayne State Biomechanical Laboratory, known for impact testing of sports helmets, cars etc, and University of Michigan, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering Departments. The focus of this first phase of the research project is to optimize the patented perforation patterns in Protech Dent for maximum strength and comfort. It is also a secondary goal to develop new composites for mouth guards. In that process we are exploring materials used in DOD sponsored body armors projects as well as novel nano composites from collaborating academic institutions.
The Goal
Akervall Technolgies and DOD want to better understand the mechanisms behind traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in a first exploratory step and to design a mouth guard that can decrease the force transfers from blasts and hits to the brain as a secondary step of the project. The goal is to both protect soldiers from TBI and to protect their teeth without compromising breathing, speaking or drinking capabilities of the soldiers.
Akervall Technologies are grateful and proud to have been chosen by Department of Defense for this important project. We are humble and honored to be able to assist our brave troops.
